VISIT FROM SLOVENIAN DELEGATION

On April 21, a group of twelve people drawn from different Slovenian organisations began a 3-day trip to the Basque Country. The group, coordinated by the Slovenian Foundation for Business Excellence, visited a series of Basque organisations recognised for business Excellence, with a view to identifying best management practices in the promotion of Excellence in the Basque Country and the reasons behind the success of our companies.

Our Slovenian guests were accompanied throughout their stay by representatives of EUSKALIT. On the first day of the visit, a meeting was organised with representatives of the Basque Government Ministries of Industry and Education, IVAP (Basque Institute of Public Administration) and EUSKALIT to discuss the reasons behind the successful promotion of business Excellence in the Basque Country and the strategies followed in achieving the current level of economic development in the region.

The second day consisted of two best practice benchmarking visits. In the morning, our guests were driven to Colegio Vizcaya (Vizcaya School), 2006 EEA Prize Winner, where Miguel Ángel Del Moral, Director of Colegio Vizcaya, and his management team explained how their management system has been deployed through a series of processes. The group were further impressed by the clarity of the presentation given by Colegio Vizcaya on the challenges facing them in the future. Later the same day, the group visited the Hospital de Basurto (Basurto Hospital), awarded the Basque Govt. Silver Q-for-Quality in 2005. Jon Darpón, CEO of the Hospital, and his management team outlined the progressive development of their management system over the years and took our guests on a tour of the hospital, including the recently reformed and enlarged A&E Area.

The third and final day consisted of a visit to Hospital de Zumarraga (Zumarraga Hospital), the only public hospital in Europe to be recognised as EEA Prize Winners (2005) and to be awarded the Premio Iberoamericano de Calidad/ Latin-American Quality Award (2007). Marbella García Urbaneja, Assistant Director of Quality of Osakidetza, explained the policy lines and plans taken forward by the different hospitals and district organisations of the Osakidetza network, whilst Alberto Colina, Hospital CEO, and Rosa Valverde gave more detailed presentations on key points of the hospital's management system, particularly leadership.

The Slovenian delegation returned home with a very positive impression of the Basque Country. Mr. Uros Zarnik, Director of the Slovenian Foundation for Business Excellence, thanked EUSKALIT…for all the effort, assistance and support given to us during our stay in Euskadi. It has been very valuable and we've learned a lot. Nenad Savic, also of the Slovenian Foundation for Business Excellence, commented that…all the visits and the program as a whole were excellently organized, and the management teams really did their best to share with us their experience”. Both expressed their interest in returning to the Basque Country and in continuing to share best management practices.
